Juniors' Manual- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (part3)

Assalammualaikum

Hello people!

Did you know that in November 2014, UMT has been hit by the worst monsoon in history with the highest record of 3 ft? How bad was that! No. That was not bad. That was indeed the most exciting part of being UMT students! As Malaysian, I'm sure you are aware of the monsoon season that strikes in every fourth quarter especially on the east coast. But not many of us has firsthand experience with it. Now let's see these photos and brace yourself with what might happen in the next monsoon.

The heavy downpour started on 17th November and continued for several days. On 20th November, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu announced this historical day as darurat and students are given emergency leave for one day.

MONSOON TIPS

On rainy days or the more extreme occurrence, FLOOD, students can just wear t-shirt, sport pants and slippers to class. However, its safer to use crocs since slippers might be too slippy. For girls, please do not insist on wearing baju kurung or skirt. You'll end up showing more aurat than you think you might cover it. Prepare an umbrella/rain coat as well.

Second, use the front route instead of Jalan Biawak especially if you are alone or in small group. The reason is because on the right side of Jalan Biawak is a beach and on the left side is a mangrove swamp. There are lots of alligator there. In case of high water velocity, you might be carried away by the stream. Especially you girls, take note okay.

Last but not least, prepare enough food supply and mineral water in your room. My mom is a nurse and she is pretty health-conscious. The first thing that she reminded me back then was to stop eating outside and prepare packed food. The food served outside might be contaminated and you will be easily affected by cholera or diarrhoea, unless if you have strong immunity. In addition, during last monsoon most of cafés are closed and students are trapped in their room. That is why you should prepare enough supply.

Anyway, this is based on what happened during last monsoon while in 2013, everything was still under control. What is going to happen during this year no ones know. You are grateful my fellow juniors! The knowledge that you gain is nothing to compare to the life experience that you might earn and applied in your lifetime.

Juniors' Manual- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (part 2)

Assalammualaikum

Hello people!

Instead of writing on faculty/subjects, I guess its better for me to write on the basics first. Furthermore, I don't want to pressure you guys with intense information. Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope it helps!

DRESSING TIPS

You guys must be anxious thinking about what to wear during class and for everyday garments. Fret not! In UMT, we do have a dress code but fortunately, the dressing rule is not strictly practised by the students. First of all, let me start with the dressing guideline during MJM.

On the first day during registration, you will be given UMT t-shirt, corporate shirt and backpack. Basically, you are required to dress formally during this orientation. No jeans, no slippers, no sandals, no fancy things. UMT shirt+black pants+covered shoes for GENTLEMEN. UMT shirt+black pants/skirt+black scarf+covered shoes for LADIES. You are not compulsory to wear formal leather/PVC shoes. Sneaker/loafers/flats can be worn but make sure it is not so eye-catching. On the last night of MJM, you will have some kind of celebration. Bring yourself a traditional clothing for this night.

Now let us move on to dressing tips for class. On the first month of being university students, most of my friends dress formally to class. But then we gradually changed our fashion and seek for the comforter option. The thing that I want to highlight here is COMFORT! Bear in mind guys, you have to walk for approximately 4 kilometres every day from college-faculty and faculty-college. The length of Jalan Biawak itself is 1.5 kilometres although it is seen as a short-cut. However, you can bring a bicycle and park 'em at bicycle shelter at each block.

Talking about comfort, you need to have a pair of good shoes since you'll be on your feet like forever. Make sure the soles of your shoes are thick enough to absorb the pressure and prevent foot pain. For girls, the best option is to wear sandals or loafer. You may wear a flat shoe, but I think its too thin and easily torn off. While for guys, you can opt for sneakers or sandals. Some guys wear slippers to class but I'm afraid you might feel discomfort because of the thin sole. For your bag, I suggest you to use backpack instead of sling/hand bag especially when you have heavier loads. This is to prevent too much pressure being put against one side of your shoulder. The only downside is that your back might be sweatier, but its a lot better than having severe muscle aches.

Most students wear jeans to class be it guys or girls. And for your top, you may wear t-shirt, OL shirt, or blouse. Basically we wear casually for class. But on special days where there are presentation, we put more effort in dressing and wear more appropriately.

When I was in the first semester, every student in Semester 1 is compulsory to join a club. The club I mention here is different from the ENACTUS, KOSISWA, KAI, TOURMAC, HISAAC, etc. You will be given a list of clubs that you can join in and its on first come first serve basis. Most of them are sports club. During these clubs activities, you will be wearing UMT shirt, sport pants and sport shoes.

SAVING TIPS

When I was a junior, I spent a lot on unnecessary things and found myself broke in the first few weeks. It took me sometimes later to realize that I can actually cut my cost and save more. For juniors especially cheapskates out there, let's join ForUMT Facebook Group where there are more than 10k members in it. Many updates on student activities, announcement, things for sale are posted here. You can find the best bargain for used goods offered by the seniors. On every semester beginning, there will be many posts on used books for sale where some of them are sold at half price! Why spend more when you can pay less?

 sources : https://www.facebook.com/groups/ForUMT/forsaleposts/

Join the group by clicking on the link below:

Moreover, you can also go to class by using public transport aka 'van kuning'. The reason why I prefer to use public transport is because it is time, energy and money saving. Why money saving? Because if you walk to class, you'll stop by and wander around in the Kompleks Siswa for awhile to cool down and end up buying things. However, when you ride 'van kuning', the pokcik will drive you straight to your faculty and there will be less temptation to spend money. A van can transport up to 18 passengers for only 40$ per ride to faculty. And instead of having to walk to class 15minutes earlier, you only need 5-10 minutes earlier to wait for the van. The 'bus stop' is located at the college back gate.

Now, let's go to the basic human need which is FOOD. In university, students allocated most of their expenses on food. And me myself, back then when I stayed in college I spent roughly RM300 on food monthly. Sometimes I took a meal daily and the other time I took twice. As I mentioned before, you can save up by taking budget meal. Many students especially boys resort to Nasi Budget and Nasi Bujang to cut off the cost of meals. I guess you all know what Nasi Bujang is. Plain rice+plain soup+sambal+telur dadar for only RM2.50. It can be ordered from every food corner or 'kedai masakan panas' especially for dinner. Instead of having Nasi Goreng Pattaya (RM5-5.50) / other goreng2 meal, you can cut your food expense into half! During day, many cafes in Limbong and Sam serve buffet style local dishes (curry, soup, masak kicap, masak lemak, sayur sayur). I usually spent RM3-4 for a meal w/o beverage. For students who have afternoon classes and only have an hour gap, you can have your lunch at your faculty cafe, Kompleks Kuliah Cafe, DD Cafe (library's ground floor) or Teratai Cafe (back door of Kompleks Siswa). There's also Nasi Budget served by Siswa Cafe here for only RM3.

Here I incorporate a rough budgeting for monthly expenses:

PTPTN :               RM2,000/4 months
                             RM500/month
Expenses:
Food                     RM300
Public transport    RM16
Reload                  RM40
Printing                 RM5
Toiletries              RM10
Others                   RM50
Total expenses      RM421

Saving                   RM79

Juniors' Manual-Universiti Malaysia Terengganu

Assalammualaikum

Hello guys.

Congratulations for those Matriculation/Pre University leavers who had accepted to be part of the community of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. For Tourism juniors, hello, your senior here! :)

From the first day of the announcement, I can smell the excitement and the positive vibes in the air produced by these UMT babies. Not to forget the tension that spread around. Since there were ENORMOUS of questions and doubts, here I'll try to shred some light for you guys to see the overview of the first day in our beloved university.

The first thing that you will be instructed to do on that day is to head over to Dewan Sultan Mizan. You don't need to carry your luggage and stuffs. Just bring all the required documents. At the entrance, you will be given waiting no. Wait patiently on the chairs with your family until your number is called. Then, head over to the grand stage and submit your documents to the officer. After that, you will be given bag, disciplinary book, shirts, some stuffs and DORMITORY KEY. Do you remember that you have to upload a passport photo for your matric card beforehand? If you had done that, that's good. But if you had difficulties uploading the photo, no worries bcs a team of photographers will get your photo taken that day. The photo shoot will be done in the Dewan and it is for FREE! Blazers are also provided with variety of sizes.

Now, its time to move into your new apartment! haha. For juniors, usually you will be placed in a 4pax room. The room is pretty small actually. Reallyy small since it is for 4 person to live in. But trust me, you will gradually adapt to it. In the room, each student will be equipped with a steel wardrobe (with attached mirror), bunk bed, mattress, study table, chair, wall shelf and a 4 tier shoe rack. There is no iron and water heater provided so you have to bring your own. The table is pretty big and can be used as study table, vanity, iron board and dining table. Remember, pillow is also not provided! For easier reference, I will list out several important things that you might need to bring for your everyday convenience.

Things to bring.
Dormitory
Pillow & bolster
Bed sheet
Blanket
Iron
Water heater
Wire extension

Everyday attire
Shirts/blouse
OL/formal shirts
Trousers/jeans
Sports attires
Sleeping wears
Sport shoes
Slipper
Sandal/flats/crocs

Class supplies
Sling bag/bagpack
Stationaries
Files
Box
Matriculation/prauniversity books

Others
Laundry stuffs
Bath and body stuffs
Wares and cuttleries
Umbrella/raincoat

Too many things to bring? Dont worry. On that day, several student clubs will set up booths and sell the students amenities to raise the clubs funds. I even bought my pillows and wares there. After you settle down, you can have your last lunch with your family before they return home. Then, you may go back to your room and rest for awhile before the siren screammmmm.

Alright! Now your orientation begin. Its around 5.30pm if I'm not mistaken. There were lotsa people there. You will be grouped based on your course (Tourism,Marketing,Fisheries, etc). Listen to briefing, do some cheer songs and then you can have your dinner. Throughout the orientation or as we call it Minggu Jalinan Mesra (MJM), you will be given FREE meals. Believe me, orientation in UMT is indeed the best orientation I have ever experience. All we did was eat, sleep and play with our gadget. Muehehe.

DORMITORY/COLLEGE

Now lets talk about the dormitory. There are 8 blocks if I'm not mistaken. 6 for lads and 2 for gents. B1 and B2 are special block for seniors. But most of male juniors will be placed in this block because of the small number of male students. It is 2/3 person per room. There is a television room at the ground floor where you can watch TV, or play snooker. Yes, there are snooker/pool table in the TV room. However, since most of juniors will be accommodated in the 4-person-per-room dormitory, I will skip on this. As for the dormitory that you will stay in, the building is quite decent. There are two large toilets in each floor. Its the common 'asrama tandas' that you found elsewhere. There are showers for bathing, toilet for pee & poo, sinks and mirrors, sanitary dustbin, pipes for wudhu' and a place to do your laundry. Next to the toilet is pantry. It is where you clean your dish. There is surau on the 1st floor. For laundry, you can opt to wash your clothes using hand (in the bathroom) or using self service laundry machine (on ground floor). The machine cost you RM2 for each usage. There is also mineral water vending machine on the ground floor of each block.

Other than that, there are 2 futsal court, bicycle shelters and mini outdoor gym in the college. You can also found few gazebos around the college where you can do group meeting or just for chilling. Wifi is available around faculty and college but you'll have to wait for a week before you can sign in.

 table & wall shelf

wardrobe with attached mirror

laundry hanger

There is only 1 plug per person, located under the table. If you think you're okay with it, that's cool. But if you need more plug and easier to reach out, then bring yourself a wire extension. You can place your books on the shelf, or on the table. But I suggest to bring a box and put it down under the table (plastic/cardboard) for better storage. Another one, bring a cute small box to store your undergarments. Also remember to bring some adhesive hooks for your towel and scarves.

Your luggage, laundry stuffs and toiletries can be placed under the bunk bed. To do your laundry, as I mentioned above, you can do it manually in the toilet or by using self service machine (RM2). Laundry hanger is available in each floor (in front of the room) and on the ground floor.

After awhile, you can do some collection with your room mates and buy a carpet, sweeper, trash can and other shared room stuffs.

Talking about rules. University life is wayyy different than school or matriculation. There is basically no curfew at all. You can leave the college and dormitory at 5am and come back at 2am the next day. It's up to you. However, you can not bring bikes or car. Bicycle is allowed. Fortunately, there are few car rental services around the university. The most prominent ones are Layar Timur and Inah Travel. They charge for RM6/hour onwards for car rental. You can use their services if you wish to go to town for shopping or for your projects.

SHOPS & CAFÉS

Shops and Café is one of the most popular topic asked by juniors. In the college itself, there are two cafe lot. Cafe Abdul Rahman Limbong (Limbong) and Cafe Sheikh Abdul Malik (Sam). At each cafe lot, you can find deli cafe, iceblog cafe, nasi kukus cafe, tomyam & masakan panas, printing service shop, convenience store, roti canai stall, burger stall, self service topup machine and others. The average cost for a meal is RM6 (food & beverage). So I spent around RM12 for 2xmeal daily. The other option to cut daily expenses is by taking budget meal such as Nasi bujang & Nasi budget (RM2.50-RM3 w/o beverage). For those who want to experience the night life of college students, you can also dine in at outsiders cafes such as D'Orange Cafe.

Just outside of the main entrance of the college, there is Kompleks Pelajar. You can find a convenient store and printing service here. Believe me, you'll find yourself going to and fro printing shop like, almost everyday especially when your lecturers start giving out assignments. You can opt to purchase a used printer from the seniors, where you can sell it back to juniors in your final year at cheaper price. Or you can also get printing services from students who offer that service. In the college, you can easily find this service where you can simply knock on their door and ask for a printing service (10-20$/sheet).

Other than that, UMT have allocated some money for the construction of Kompleks Siswa for UMT community. It is a one stop centre for the students, staffs, lecturers and everyone. There is a small CIMB branch nested in here and also several shops & kiosks such as:

  • De Jour Pastry
  • Book Garden
  • Tshoppe
  • Boutique
  • AE Garment
  • Tiket Bus MBKT
  • World of Printing
  • local cosmetics shop
  • mobile accessories shop
  • men salon

  • kiosks in Kompleks Siswa
